PUP TRAINING FAQ’s

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

We start with a phone consultation or chat via email to talk about the dog, training goals, and any other important information. From there, you may book your PUP’s initial session. After the initial session, we will discuss training plans with several packages available.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work in dog training?

My education degree has given me many beneficial skills in working with people and children. Planning and clear communication are key to educating anyone be it human or canine. I have also had a lifelong passion for animals. I originally wanted to be a marine mammal trainer and attended sea world camp senior year summer of high school before college. I have volunteered at many places with access to exotic and domesticated animals such as The Gentle Zoo and The Dallas Zoo. Observing animal behavior is crucial when working with these different species. I also have experience in the pet care industry with retail, sales and daycare settings.

How did you get started training dogs?

I love dogs and wanted to work with established dog trainers, I found a company with methods and morals aligned with my own. The biggest wealth of information for me was a trainer friend who handled all of the aggression and fear cases. She taught me so much and mentored me to a whole world of resources and others to learn from. From getting to know these other positive trainers I have kept expanding on my knowledge. Every day I strive to learn better ways to help everyone I have the privilege of working with.

What do I need to do before a training session?

Essentials for our session are an approved treat pouch, harness and appropriate leash (no retractables), and high value treats which can be found at PUP Stuff. I can cover the rest when working together. DO NOT starve your dog or wear them out before our session. It’s not necessary and can actually make learning harder.

What can I expect in the first session?

Introductions are everything! The initial session is the most informative for me and for the PUP parent. In the first session, I will:

  • Meet the family and understand the PUP home environment

  • Assess and determine training goals

  • Give homework. You will understand exactly how to reinforce and practice what was covered. Repetition is your friend.

What training method do you use?

Positive reinforcement. In a nutshell, I reward behaviors I like and ignore or redirect behaviors that are not desirable. Teaching an alternative to bad habits is most effective. I do not use force, pain, or intimidation techniques. This ensures a trustworthy and healthy relationship between the teacher and student.

Do you train multiple dogs at once?

I do not! Two or three headed dogs are not ideal in a productive training scenario. It is always best to work with a dog on behaviors in the least distracting environment initially. I recommend having other dogs in the home in a safe secure space away from the session to ensure the one on one training is most effective.

What age should I start training my dog?

Ideally ASAP! I have worked with families BEFORE the dog or puppy has arrived in their new home. The key is to set everyone up to succeed and prevent issues vs solving them if possible! I have even helped coach a family into the best fit for their situation and family.

Is my dog too old for training?

NO! I love working with older dogs. It’s always a win to keep enriching dogs lives as they age. Training is not just for puppies! There are so many fun and creative ways to work with animals of any age. I love when I can add some mental enrichment or helpful new habits to any dog’s life. We can teach old dogs new tricks!

What services do you provide and what is the pricing ?

There are both individual and session packages available and other services, such as walks, puppy visits, house visits and transport. For more information go to Pricing and Packages or call (469) 571-3355.

How many sessions will I need?

After our initial session, I can further assess and make some recommendations for your PUP training goals. Follow-up packages available.

How often should I practice with my dog?

Short and Sweet is such a beneficial way to practice. A common guideline is to practice 3 to 5 minutes at a time, 3 to 5 times a day. The goal is to not to over-do training. End on a high note and don’t get greedy with progress.

Do you guarantee results?

I do not and here is why:

Training depends on the teacher, environment, and most importantly upkeep or follow through. I lay foundations for success. You, as the owner, are responsible for maintaining training throughout the puppies life. Dog Trainers are not magicians. We set you and your pup up for success!

What do I do when my puppy bites?

More importantly it's what you shouldn’t do! Avoid saying no, yelping, hitting, shoving hands further in their mouths. I have heard many outdated and misinformed tactics that people say seem to work. Believe me there are MUCH better ways to handle this normal issue. The absolute best thing you can do is give the puppy an appropriate alternative to chew on immediately. Puppy biting has many causes. These can be because a puppy has been over handled, puppy is beyond tired, or the puppy has an excess of energy and just need an appropriate choice for chewing. Puppies NATURALLY use their mouths to interact with the world. They are learning at an alarming rate through these interactions. It is NOT important or crucial to tell a puppy NO. Trust me. It is much more beneficial to show them what they should be doing AND understanding where their energy level is and help them as needed. Naps can be SO beneficial in these “bitey” times. Alternatives to chew on instead of fingers can be found in my recommended items tab.

Do you work with aggressive dogs?

I do not work with dogs that are aggressive towards humans or other dogs or that have confirmed bite cases. If the dog has injured a human or another dog this is crucial information I will direct you to a trusted certified behavior consultant or a trainer that specializes in aggression. I am more than happy to help guide you to a qualified expert
